Hockney is one of the world's most influential and popular artists. Born in Bradford in the UK in 1937, he studied at the Bradford School of Art and the Royal College of Art in London before going on to create some of the most celebrated works of contemporary art of the last 60 years.
Since his first retrospective exhibition at London's Whitechapel Art Gallery in 1970, when he was just 33, the artist has continued to attract the interest of critics and the public alike. Drawing on many sources, including popular imagery and the works of old and modern masters, David Hockney's work focuses on the great classics of art (still lifes, portraits and landscapes) and on his great obsession: representation and perspective. He has always been avant-garde and daring, challenging our perception of the world. In his work, he has also highlighted the multiplicity of possibilities in the traditional fields of painting, engraving and drawing, as well as in his more contemporary use of photography and digital technologies.
In 9 sections tracing his career from the mid-1950s to the present day, the works presented in this exhibition come mainly from the Tate collection in the UK, but also from private collections. They illustrate David Hockney's unique journey through the many ways in which he has interrogated nature, the world around us and the representation of it, from his creations as a promising student, to his masterpieces recognised as those of one of the greatest living artists.
